Abrasive water cutting of 2no. hatches to two separate storage tanks.
Project overview

As part of a wider tank cleaning project at an oil terminal in the South East of England, Hydrotec was contracted to create access openings in two storage tanks using abrasive water jet cutting.
The challenge
Following the initial removal of bulk sludge, access openings were required to provide improved visibility into the tanks and support the ongoing cleaning and inspection works.
The tank levels first had to be reduced below the proposed height of each access window. Once the bulk de-sludging was complete, Hydrotec could safely begin the cutting operation.
A key consideration was the safe removal and handling of the steel coupons once they had been cut free. The process therefore had to incorporate controlled lifting and removal, while ensuring the cutting equipment remained securely positioned throughout.
The solution
Hydrotec deployed its abrasive water jet cutting equipment to create the required access openings.
Using ultra-high-pressure water combined with garnet abrasive, the system cuts through steel without creating sparks. This cold-cutting process can be particularly valuable in environments where eliminating ignition sources is a critical consideration.
A four-legged radius cutter was first secured to the tank using magnetic feet. The initial cuts were made to create lifting eyes, allowing telehandler forks to be positioned for the controlled removal of the steel coupon.
A four-legged radius cutter attached to the side of a tank Telehandler fork lift releasing the side opening of the tank Section of the surface prepped to create the initial tank openings.
A magnetic track cutter was then attached to complete the bottom and side cuts around the access opening.
Before the final cut was made, the telehandler forks were positioned through the newly created lifting eyes and the equipment was prepared to safely take the weight of the coupon. Following final safety checks, the top cut was completed, releasing the coupon.
The steel section was then safely lifted away and placed in a designated storage area using the telehandler.
The result

The two tanks were successfully fitted with access openings as part of the wider cleaning programme, providing improved visibility and access while maintaining a controlled and carefully managed cutting process.
The project demonstrated the benefits of abrasive water jet cutting where cold cutting is required and spark generation needs to be avoided.
